Canterbury Reflection Benches
Our concept for the North Downs Way uses natural materials to create a sculpture that blends seamlessly into the landscape while offering inspiring views and contemplative spaces. The design features a rammed earth base, layered to reflect time and history, which also serves as a bench and resting place for visitors to sit, relax, and reflect. Rising from this foundation are curved spines of locally sourced timber that weather to a silver tone, creating an ethereal effect. Subtle from a distance yet powerful up close, the sculpture frames Canterbury Cathedral, referencing pilgrims’ journeys and encouraging personal contemplation. Materials will be sourced locally, and the community will be involved in the eco-friendly rammed earth construction, fostering pride and ownership while enhancing the trail with sustainable, functional art that combines beauty, history, and purpose.
