Doagh ‘flourish’ and Burnside ‘wild and free’

Doagh ‘flourish’ and Burnside ‘wild and free’

Winning Commission

We propose to make a 1.5-meter circular artwork in sand stone, made up of four quarter segments set flush into the new paving in the square. The sandstone circle will be engraved with a pattern depicting flax flowers referencing the significance of the linen mills in the area. There was a mill at Doagh from at least the middle of 18th century and probably for over 100 years before that.

We will create a trail of animal sculptures depicting wildlife that could be seen in the area. We feel bringing these animals to life, in 3-D form will raise awareness of the wildlife and how special the place is, encouraging people to be proud of it and look after it. The sign on the walk asks the visitor to look out for Song Thrush, Foxes, Grey Herron and the Common Blue butterfly but on research there are also Otters, Kingfishers and Dippers who enjoy the good water quality.
