Canal Lock Benches
These canal benches are inspired by the industrial heritage of the canal an engineered waterway carved into the landscape over 200 years ago, the benches echo the robust timber and steel construction of lock gates. Each bench will feature heavy timber blocks secured with steel plates and bolts, evoking the craftsmanship of original lock builders and harmonizing with the canal setting. Their design incorporates rectangular timber patterns arranged at varying angles to reflect the partitioned fields adjacent to the canal, with a routed line representing the Canal’s route there sit by. This ‘cut’ may be filled with marine-grade filler or cast metal inlay, while burnished lines and lettering will denote locks, bridges, and landmarks, including a “you-are-here” marker. Every bench will be unique in form and detailing, referencing its location for example, a folded up-rest near a lift bridge and will sit on black powder-coated steel brackets bolted to concrete bases, reinforcing the impression of lock timbers suspended beside the towpath.
